Workshop Title: Problem-Based Learning Review and Planning


Day: 8


Subject of the Day's Workshop:

To further develop application of Problem-Based Learning using collaborative Web 2.0 tools from the workshop in order to promote collaboration, literacy skills, and critical thinking development within the middle school English Language Arts classroom.

Prerequisite Knowledge:

  1. Knowledge and application of Web 2.0 tools from the workshop.
  2. Understanding of Problem-Based Learning.

Content:

As a culmination of the eight day workshop, participants will explore Problem-Based Leaning through the use of questions and creation of a learning experience that is designed using the principles of Problem-Based Learning. Problem-Based learning allows students to explore curricular topics through inquiry and questioning. The collaborative Web 2.0 tools will support the creation of a Problem-Based Learning experience within the middle school English Language Arts classroom to further develop content, collaboration, literacy, and critical thinking skills.

Objectives of the Lesson:

By the end of Day 8, participants will be able to:
  1. Apply various collaborative Web 2.0 tools to create a Problem-Based Learning experience for students.
  2. Recognize, understand, and apply various ways that Web 2.0 tools can be utilized in the middle school English Language Arts classroom to support Problem-Based Learning.
  3. Transform teaching practices through the use of Web 2.0 tools and Problem-Based Learning to improve literacy development, collaboration, and critical thinking skills within the middle school English Language Arts classroom.
  4. Create and develop activities that utilize Web 2.0 tools to support a Problem-Based Learning experience within the middle school English Language Arts classroom and at home.
  5. Engage in self evaluation and workshop evaluation.

Lesson Format:

  1. Brief question and answer session to address lingering questions from participants regarding information from Day 7.
  2. Facilitator will review concepts that embrace Problem-Based Learning and questioning strategies. Participants will interact with presentations given by facilitator in collaborative groups.
  3. Facilitator will review the LoTi Scale with participants to evaluate current levels of technology integration.
  4. Individual Planning Time: Participants will create a Problem-Based Learning experience that encompasses current content within middle school English Language Arts and three or more of the Web 2.0 technologies to support the PBL. Facilitator will be able to meet individually with participants during this time to aid in development or answer questions.
  5. Self and Workshop Day Evaluation.

Additional Materials and How They will be Used:

Problem-Based Learning Reference Guide: Will be used as a reference to support reinforcement of Problem-Based Learning concepts.

Edutopia: Problem-Based Learning: Will be used to view examples of PBLs as well as a personal reference for participants when examining differences between Problem and Project based learning.

Action words to Support Questioning and Bloom's: Will be used as a reference for teachers while creating PBL.

LoTi Framework Levels: Will be utilized to evaluate current technology integration level prior to creating PBL.
